Welcome to the home of COMP 374 and 410, Operating Systems, at Loyola University Chicago in the Computer Science Department.

This site is gradually being populated with content during August 2011 with the idea of being ready when classes begin at the end of August 2011. You are welcome to browse but please make sure to check back often as we'll be making many updates in the coming weeks.

This revamped offering will be a thorough introduction to operating systems concepts, theory, design, and implementation. In addition, it will serve as a comprehensive introduction to systems, where students will learn by doing. You are expected to know and/or learn C/C++, which is the principal teaching language for the course. Consequently, you are likely to find this course very challenging and demanding of your time.

The teaching framework for this course will be a combination of Minix and Linux (see Ubuntu and Debian as examples). The latter will be used for more advanced assignments in filesystems, etc. You will need to have or obtain access to a computer for this course. All work can be done on any platform that can run virtualization software such as VirtualBox or VMware (available for free through our academic alliance).

The instructor for this course is Prof. George K. Thiruvathukal. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Joe Kaylor will be a special guest lecturer throughout the semester. If you are interested in becoming an expert in systems, you won't want to miss this course offering!
